Lady Wildcats ride past Buffaloes, 67-62
K-State hit four critical free throws in the final 26 seconds to pull out a big road win at Colorado Feb. 8 as the Wildcats defeated the Buffaloes, 67-62, at the Coors Events Center. Kimberly Dietz scored 12 points and JoAnn Hamlin and Marlies Gipson each added 11 to lead K-State (17-5, 7-4), which won for the seventh time on the road this season to take sole possession of fourth place in the Big 12 Conference. The Wildcats also got a huge effort from Shalee Lehning, who connected on 6-of-8 free throws over the final two minutes of the game and finished the contest with nine points and 10 rebounds. Yari Escalera led all scorers with 18 points and Caley Dow added 12 to pace Colorado (7-16, 2-9), which dropped its eighth in a row to the Wildcats. K-State trailed by one at the break, but began to heat up from beyond the arc in the second half. All told, the Wildcats drilled seven three-pointers during the final 20 minutes and finished the contest with 10 treys, marking the third time this season K-State has knocked down at least 10 triples in a game. Still, Colorado hung with K-State and tied the game at 53-53 on a jumper by Lauren Lubin with 7:23 to go. A free throw by Jessica McFarland just 12 seconds later, quickly put the Wildcats back on top and K-State never trailed again. The Buffaloes, who have now lost four-straight at home to the Wildcats, made it 63-62 with 27 seconds to play on a jumper by Jackie McFarland. But, Lehning was able to put the game on ice with three free throws over the next 12 seconds, before Gipson added a free throw with three seconds to play to provide the final margin of victory. |
