Decreased state funding for Kansas State University inspired David and Pamela Beardmore to support students with a new scholarship.

The David and Pamela Beardmore Chemical Engineering Scholarship, boosted by matching gifts from David’s employer, ConocoPhillips, will support chemical engineering students preparing to enter the workforce.

“I hope it provides a student a little breathing room to attend K-State, so they can focus on studying and less on working to fund their attendance,” David said. “There are so many ways to get involved at K-State, and all those activities help you later in your career.”

The Missouri City, Texas, couple, both K-State alumni, felt a chemical engineering degree has very broad application in the marketplace.

“It prepares students for an array of careers, so we feel comfortable that we’ll be helping create a productive professional,” David said. “We feel that this scholarship will definitely have a positive impact.”

Alumni create scholarships to help offset rising cost of education

When Jim and Marsha Reed met in their junior-level marketing class at K-State, they never imagined they would eventually marry, launch a successful business and be able to support students at their alma mater.

Through two new scholarships for K-State students, that’s just what the Naples, Florida couple is doing.

“Education is the single most important part in looking to the future of our country, our industry and the world,” Marsha said.
