On May 17, graduates gathered at the Alumni Center to celebrate their success, accomplishments and diversity. The Multicultural Graduation Celebration honors multicultural students graduating in May, August or December. The event is designed to be an evening of fun, with door prizes and food.

While all students in attendance received achievement certificates, four students selected by the Multicultural Alumni Council and K-State Alumni Association board of directors were recognized with Multicultural Leadership Awards. Recipients are nominated by members of the faculty and staff.

"We are proud to honor these students for their years of service and leadership through multicultural organizations and activities," said Alumni Association President and CEO Amy Button Renz. "The results of their efforts in encouraging diversity will leave lasting marks on the university."

Myra Gordon, associate provost of the Office of Diversity, spoke to students about leadership and important steps they should each take as they strive to succeed in life. The members of the Multicultural Alumni Council also spoke to the newly minted alumni and encouraged them to stay connected and involved with K-State. Graduating students were able to share personal stories and memories about their time at K-State.

Jessica Elmore, assistant director of multicultural programs for the K-State Alumni Association, said, "This event is special because students and family members are able to engage with Dr. Myra Gordon and Amy Button Renz in a personal and intimate way. Students' family members get to see their them recognized for such a milestone accomplishment; one student had 16 family members in attendance."

The Multicultural Graduation Celebration not only recognizes students, but also is an opportunity for them to connect and say their farewells before the chaos of graduation parties, out-of-town guests, residence hall move-outs and more.
