Always a popular spot on campus, the K-State Student Union is an even busier place this year, undergoing a major renovation and celebrating its 60th anniversary.

Originally built in 1956, the K-State Student Union has been an important part of campus life founded by students, for students. The “Your Union” campaign began when K-State students recognized the need for major improvements to the aging facility. In 2013, the student body voted to approve a $31 million renovation plan, and construction began in September 2015.

The renovated Union will include a new south facade with windows, up-to-date retail areas, collaborative student lounge space and an innovative tech lounge. The food court will be replaced by mini-restaurants that will offer a variety of food choices and seating locations.

The Union has remained open during the renovation, although certain areas have had to be closed periodically while under construction. Students and staff also have enjoyed eating at a variety of food trucks that have filled Bosco Student Plaza during the renovation.

In the midst of the construction, the K-State Student Union also celebrated its 60th anniversary in May, offering free Call Hall ice cream, T-shirts, band performances, magician acts and even camel rides.

The “Your Union” renovation is projected to be completed in December 2016. A grand opening for the newly renovated Union will be tentatively scheduled for January 2017.
