Graduating students earn Anderson Senior, Graduate Student and Multicultural Leadership awards

The K-State Alumni Association has recognized 10 Kansas State University graduating students for their outstanding academics, leadership, inspiration and service. Recipients of the Anderson Senior Awards and Graduate Student Awards were recognized April 25 at a luncheon at the K-State Alumni Center, and the recipients of the Multicultural Leadership Awards will be honored May 17 at the Multicultural Graduation Celebration at the center.

Anderson Senior Awards
Four graduating seniors earned the Anderson Senior Awards, which recognize outstanding achievements during the students' college careers. The 2013 award recipients are:

• Outstanding Academics: Maureen Orth, English, Prairie Village, Kan.
• Outstanding Inspiration: James Geary, management, Overland Park, Kan.
• Outstanding Leadership: Bronson Blackwell, accounting, Wichita, Kan.
• Outstanding Service: DeeAnn Turpin, biological systems, Leavenworth, Kan.

Graduate Student Awards
The Alumni Association recognized two graduate students for their academics, leadership and service. The following are recipients of 2013 Graduate Student Awards:

• Outstanding Academics: Romil Bhandavat, mechanical engineering, India
• Outstanding Leadership and Service: Kat Lopez, mass communication, Sante Fe, N.M.

Faculty and peers nominated students for the Anderson Senior and Graduate Student awards, and members of the Alumni Association board of directors and K-State students selected the winning candidates.

“These winners were chosen from a group of outstanding candidates,” said Megan Sherlock, associate director of student programs for the Alumni Association. “We are excited to honor these six individuals for what they have achieved at K-State.”

Multicultural Leadership Awards
The K-State Alumni Association will present Multicultural Leadership Awards to four outstanding multicultural graduating students for their leadership and service during their college careers at K-State. The 2013 award recipients, who were nominated by K-State faculty members and selected by the Alumni Association board of directors and the Multicultural Alumni Council, are:

• Macario Benavides, education and modern languages, Allen, Texas
• Bronson Blackwell, accounting, Wichita, Kan.
• Christa Martinez, social work, Wichita, Kan.
• Angela Muhwezi, biology, Wichita, Kan.

These graduating students have shown outstanding leadership and have actively promoted multicultural education on K-State’s campus and/or in the Manhattan community.

“These outstanding graduates have served as leaders of multicultural organizations and activities throughout their time at K-State,” said Jessica Elmore, assistant director of multicultural programs for the Alumni Association. “It’s an honor to award these students for their service and leadership.”
